PALMYRA — The Fluvanna Relay for Life committee recently announced the Fluco Sports Net play-by-play man will host the local June event.
“To even be thought of is an honor and I’m glad they wanted me to announce,” said Bryan Rothamel of Fluco Sports Net. “I enjoyed working Relay for Life events growing up and can’t wait to work with the first Fluvanna one.”

The Fluvanna Relay for Life will be at Costello Stadium at the current Fluvanna County High School. The 24-hour event starts at 4 p.m. on June 9. Currently there are 20 teams signed up with 86 participants.
As of Jan. 25, the event has already raised over $2,500 for cancer research.
“I was so excited when they asked I couldn’t sit still for the rest of the day. Relay is such a great organization and one close to my heart,” said Rothamel who walked with his family during the Survivor’s Walk in last year’s Relay for Life at Monticello High School. In the last year, Rothamel’s mother overcame breast cancer.

In the past three years Rothamel has broadcast two state basketball playoff runs and a regional tournament for soccer. The most listened to broadcast was the Fluvanna boys’ basketball team in the state semifinals against Waynesboro with over 150 listeners.
Prior to November 2009, Rothamel broadcast on the Big South Network, covering High Point University’s baseball and volleyball teams.
Also at High Point University, Rothamel was the public address announcer for baseball, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball teams. In March 2008, he announced the opening of the Coy O. Willard Sr. Stadium. The following August he announced the opening of the Vert Track, Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
