PALMYRA — A second quarter surge helped the Fluvanna boys’ basketball team beat Western Albemarle 67-47 Tuesday night to open the Jefferson District schedule.
“I thought we played really well as a team. I think we are getting better as the year goes on,” said FCHS head coach Munro Rateau.
The Flucos (9-1, 1-0 Jefferson District) hit their stride midway through the second quarter, holding a 22-18 lead. Fluvanna ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 31-18 lead into the break. FCHS then opened the third quarter continuing the run by scoring 10 of the first 11 points of the stanza. It stretched Fluvanna’s lead to the largest of the game, 41-18.

Western Albemarle started a comeback bringing the game within 11 points near the end of the third quarter. Fluvanna maintained the 52-41 advantage and never let the game get any closer the rest of the way. FCHS never trailed.
The third quarter comeback attempt from WAHS was lead by sophomore guard Parker Morris who finished with 20 points behind five 3-pointers. Western would use double and even triple screens to keep defenders away from Morris.
“It is really hard [playing defense on Morris]. You got to work around screens, you got to be in his face 95 percent of the time because if he gets lose, he’ll open shot,” said Fluco YaYa Anderson who switched to guard Morris in the second half.
The Flucos came into the game short one player with Jake Smith sitting out due to injury. The shift brought extended minutes for Jalen Harrison, Blake Hills, Trevonne Bradley and Taylor Lintecum.
“With Jake not out there, he’s a big body that can push around and be physical down in there. It put a lot on Jalen, Trevonne, Blake and me; we had to play a lot more physical in there,” said Lintecum who finished 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Anderson lead the way for Fluvanna with 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Vinny Agee finished with 13 points while Hills finished with eight points.
The road doesn’t get easier for the Flucos when Monticello comes to the Shoebox on Jan. 5. The Mustangs knocked off Appomattox 61-36 on Tuesday night.
“They are all big games from now on. If we want to get back to the regions, we got to win every game in the district and not take a night off,” said Rateau.
The Fluvanna-Monticello match up is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The game will be broadcast as part of the Strong Team Realtors Key Week.
