PALMYRA — Fluvanna fell to visiting Madison 24-21 despite holding the lead for most of the game.
“We had a couple of series where we had some bad things happen to us. We have to be a more complete team from quarter one to quarter four,” said Fluvanna’s interim head coach Jason Barnett said.
Fluvanna was led by quarterback TJ Dudley with 143 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Quin Stith had 35 rushing yards while Ben Markiewicz had 18 yard of his own.
Fluvanna held a 21-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter despite Madison bringing the ball within 10 yards of the goal line. With just over eight minutes left, the Mountaineers offense pushed through with a 32-yard rush to give Madison the final score.
It was all Fluvanna early though as the Flucos scored on their third and fourth drives. Fluvanna held Madison to 23 yards offensively until MCHS scored on a 47-yard dash to make it 14-7 with 6:41 left in the second quarter.
Fluvanna’s TJ Dudley responded on the next offensive play for FCHS. His 69-yard quarterback keeper with 6:17 in the first half would be the last score for Fluvanna.
“We just ran opposite power out of the gun. We are conditioned really well so once we get going it is hard to stop,” Dudley said.
Fluvanna only manage 41 yards after the final Dudley score. The ball would stay on the Fluvanna defensive side of the field for the rest of the game except for the final two plays.
“Madison made some really good adjustments in the second half. We tried running stuff that we are good at and they did a great job of taking that away. We had to go to our second and third and fourth best plays,” said Barnett.
Fluvanna (1-1) has a week off before taking to the road against Buckingham. The Knights beat Nelson 27-13 for their second win of the young season. Last year Fluvanna lost 28-10 to BCHS at Costello Stadium.
